Thank You! To all the parents who have taken on a job, no matter how small or large. We thank you. The pack cannot work without the out the help of dedicated parents.

Seriously everyone, we need people to step up and help in order to keep the pack running. If you can give an hour or more, we welcome your help and dedication to our scouts. “It takes a village to build a child”. Let’s work together to make our scout troop the best it can be!

We’ll be losing Steve Corby, Wendy Cucci and Steven Costello in September 2009.

We already have Ray Mott who has stepped up to take the Wolves. Thank you!

Notes:

Dress Uniforms: We ask that all boys have a uniform that consists of a shirt (long or short sleeve) with the required patches sewn onto the correct place, a hat, neckerchief and “slide”. We would like the boys to have belts, but “official” pants and socks are optional.

Red Vests: Red vests are used to place all of the activity patches the cub receives. They do not have to be given by the pack; you can collect on your own as well. You are free to put what you like and where you like. The purpose of the red vest is to show where a scout has been and be used as a conversation opener.

Scouting
By: Andrew Cucci

I like scouting. I started when I was in the first grade. I joined Pack 6.
We go camping a lot. My favorite is when we go to Camp Bullowa. We sleep in cabins and we need to make a fire in the fireplace to keep warm. We make stew for dinner every time I go.
My second favorite activity is the pine wood derby. We get a block of wood, four nails and four wheels. We cut the wood into any shape , and paint it. I never won yet but I want to win this year because, in February it will be my last time doing it. Next year I will be in Boy Scouts.
I also like Blue & Gold. It’s Cub Scouting’s birthday. We get food and entertainment. One year the O.A. team came and dressed up like Indians and danced.
When I am done with cub Scouts I will move to Boy Scouts troop 118 like my brother. My Dad is on the committee for Boy Scouts.

Uniforms:

Dress Uniforms:
We have successfully completed one uniform inspection thus far. We are due for another one soon. We ask that all boys have a uniform that consists of a shirt (long or short sleeve) with the required patches sewn onto the correct place. A hat, neckerchief and slide. We would like the boys to have belts but “official” pants and socks are optional.

Red Vests:
The Webelo Den has made red vests for all scouts. If you have not received one or need a new one please see the Webelo leader; Steve Corby. Red vests are used to place all of the activity patches the cub receives. They do not have to be given by the pack, you can collect on your own as well. You are free to put what you like and where you like. The purpose of the red vest is to show where a scout has been and be used as a conversation opener.

Field Uniforms: Last spring Pack 6 purchased new t-shirts for all boys and sold them at recruitment. There are few left in stock. If you would like one please see Mrs. Cucci. Class B t-shirts are an alternative to their uniform. Class b is the perfect way to represent us while at an informal event.

Service Projects:
We have been very busy this year with our generosity to our community. We have completed the following service projects;
October- supplies for soldiers
November - scouting for food
Candy poppers for the seniors
December - toys for children

A couple of boys continued their giving around the holidays. Adrian & Edsel Asencio, Nathan Kirk, Scott Rolon & Ki Wickiser spent Christmas morning (before opening their gifts) at Safe Harbors in Newburgh serving Christmas breakfast. The boys and their families should be proud. A job well done.

Medals of faith/ Religious Awards:
Please know that this program is open to any scout of any religion. The requirements are found in individual books of every faith at the council store. (each scout must purchase his own work book and submit the completed form in the back of the book) If your cub would like to earn a religious knot, please speak to your den leader.

Our Big Trip
We are planning our big trip for this year. The pack voted and it looks as if the sleep over event at the Philadelphia Zoo has one. We are currently waiting on a date from them. Hopefully they can accommodate us is May. Further information is forthcoming. There will be a sign up sheet at the January Pack meeting, and we will begin collecting money in February.

Summer Camp:
Council summer camp brochures will be available in February. If you are considering attending a program please pick up a brochure at a pack meeting.
(I am sure Andrew will be attending again this year, and will let everyone know what session we pick as soon as I can)

Pack 6 normally sets up 6 camping trips per year. We have our first camp out in May, and our last in October. We normally choose Memorial Day weekend and it looks as if we will be picking that again this year.
Pack 6 has family camping. That means we provide the place and activities, and you (as a family) provide your tent, and sleeping equipment. All Cubs must sleep in their own tents with a parent or an adult. Boys are not permitted to sleep in tents together unless that is how the individual families arrange that. Camping is always open to family members but please remember you are responsible for your family and guests.

We will be talking about cub camping at up coming pack meetings. Sign up sheets will be available as each date comes closer.
This year we will be providing camping free to all registered scouts + one adult. All additional family members will be $5.00 per person.

Our camping schedule will be set at our March committee meeting. If there is a place you would like to camp this season please talk to a committee member.

Pine Wood Derby:
It is almost that time of the year. All boys will be receiving a pine wood derby car kit at the Blue & Gold. (It will be wrapped, so please don’t open it, lest you may loose some parts) We will be holding races on Friday, February27th in the Fellowship Hall at the Cornwall Presbyterian Church, at 7:30. Check in time begins at 7:00.
Please remember to use the nail and wheels that come in the kit, and to stay to the weight limit. (5 ounces) All cars will be weighed in before the race. We will offer a “pit stop” for those in need of last minute adjustments. But please remember that the longer the check in period, the more time we all have to wait for the races to begin. (You can always check the wait at the post office scale)

We will once again be hosting our “open division.” This is open to all family members. There is no weight limit, but your car does have to fit onto the track properly to race.

Please remember Derby night is one of the most anticipated events, and most exciting. We really do our best to run it smoothly, and with out tears. But, it might be helpful to talk at home about there only being 4 winners that go home with a trophy. All boys are awarded certificates and patches.

Friends of Scouting:
What is friends of scouting?
It is the annual fund-raising campaign that provides scout families, community organizations and local businesses the opportunity to support Scouting and Learning for Life programs in our community.
If you would like to make a donation please send a check to:
Hudson Valley Council, BSA
Pack 6 will be having a friends of scouting event at an upcoming pack meeting.

Save the Date:
The fourth of July this year is a Friday! Cornwall usually holds their annual parade at 5:00 pm.. (rain or shine) Any suggestions for our float and/or costumes??? We have had a request from the pageant organizers to be Indians, as they can always use Indians for the pageant. Any Ideas???

Wendy’s Dream…..
7 years ago I stepped up to help when the pack was looking for new people to run the pack as the cub master & committee chair were moving on. I never thought that I would stay on and accumulate so many jobs. But, it happened and it is now time for others to step up and learn to take over.
My dream is to have a person in place for all my jobs before June. I would love to spend my son’s last couple of months as a Cub Scout parent. I have always said that I would give to Andrew everything I gave to Peter, and the time is now to give to Andrew what he deserves. A parent who is there for him and not all the boys. I would love to sit in the audience and take pictures and see his last months as a Cub Scout looking at him. I can only do this if someone else is doing the jobs I do. Please say you can help. It really isn’t hard and the rewards are plenty.

Stepping Down:
In June of this year the committee will beginning the process of fazing out some of the key people.
(One year from now, Feb.2010, 3 long time pack 6 leaders will be moving on.)

The following position MUST be filled to insure that Pack 6 will continue.

Please note they are not all big jobs, some only take a couple of hours of time. Also, they are not gender specific. All jobs are open to either males or females.
Committee Chair- sets monthly agendas for committee meeting & Pack meetings. Sets building use for pack & dens. 2nd signature on checking account, organize pack outing and sign up sheets (this can be delegated to someone else) THE PACK CANNOT OPPERATE WITH OUT A COMMITTEE CHAIR!

Pop Corn Kernel - Organize all parts of the packs only fundraiser. Including booth sales. (this can be delegated to someone else if you choose)

Recruitment - organize the packs way of increasing scouts. We have in the past 7 years held a picnic to encourage scouts to come. But it is not the only way. All parents and leaders are on hand for this event, but someone needs to coordinate it.

Newsletter - two times a year pack 6 sends a newsletter informing families of all upcoming events and news. This is an optional job, but it really helps keep all families knowledgeable.

Blue & Gold - every year in February pack 6 holds a party to celebrate the birthday of Cub Scouting, and to advance the Webelo II boys over the bridge into Boy Scouts. This event is a multi person job, but needs to have one person in charge to make sure all parts a done.

The Charter - Every January Pack 6’s charter is up for renewal. Someone needs to collect the registration fee, and have computer access to up date the roster. This is only a couple of hours of work at best, but must happen on Councils schedule.

The Web Site - (www.packsix.org) Pack 6 currently has a web site that is updated by Mr. Corby. We will need to have a person take over all aspects of the web site. We currently pay a fee for a friend of the pack to host our site.

Assistant Cub Master - As of this printing I believe we have found our new Cub Master to take over as soon as June. But that leaves the spot of Assistant open. We need someone willing to be the back up man or women.

Charter Organization Rep. - Our Charter is held by the Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School PTO. We need a person who belongs to the PTO and is will to sign all adult leader applications. We need this person beginning in February 2009! Yes that’s only a couple of weeks away. THE PACK CANNOT OPPERATE WITH OUT A CHARTER REP.

Charter Liaison - This can be the same person as the Org. Rep. But, this person needs to be able to attend a PTO meeting if either Pack 6 or the PTO requests any information. It would be nice if there was a pre existing relation ship, but not a must. We need to have this person in February of 2009. THE PACK CANNOT OPPERATE WITH OUT A CHARTER LIAISON.

AS YOU CAN SEE Pack 6 is currently in a growth spurt. We need your help to insure that the boys get a good quality Cub Scout program. Council offers training for any and all of these positions.

Please see a committee member
if you can help.

Thank You!
To all the parents who have taken on a job, no matter how small or large. We thank you. The pack cannot work with out the help of dedicated parents.
